What Tennyson looks like in the Tennyson 2020 Plan

Perhaps the most important consideration in developing the Tennyson 2020 Plan was visualizing what Tennyson could become during the life of the plan. Therefore, the Board’s top consideration in forming the Tennyson 2020 Plan was Community Image. The following describes the physical elements of the two choices the Board considered. The Board accepted Option #1 and rejected Option #2.

Option #1: (Accepted)

Maintain the existing “Contemporary Transitional” architectural theme and vision for Tennyson:
  • This is the style current owners saw of the Community when they first bought their home.
  • This approach maintains Tennyson’s developer’s original theme and design intent.
  • This theme creates and maintains a natural, informal, park-like setting that reflects a gracious, but changing, community lifestyle.
  • The landscaping plan would intend to enhance the architectural style of the community.
  • This approach would develop and maintain a personal “View-of-Nature” from the patio-side or deck-side of each unit.
  • This plan would encourage and preserve natural greenspaces, features, and surroundings.
  • Indigenous plantings and areas for seasonal changes of wildflowers would be nurtured and maintained.
  • This plan maintains Tennyson’s current “Contemporary Transitional” architectural theme and style.
  • This style is a blend of complimentary timeless design elements from various architectural periods.
  • Architectural elements would be replaced whenever necessary with equivalent or improved designs, colors, and materials. Examples include:
-  Current acorn-globed streetlights,
-  Stained wood fencing at bridges and featured locations,
-  Stained wood fencing and gate at pool,
-  Contemporary style painted wood street signposts,
-  If added, textured asphalt at street crossings, with interlocking pavers at key sidewalk feature areas,
-  Simple standard-issue USPS approved mailboxes,
-  Current contemporary styled wood and metal park benches,
-  Antiqued brass exterior lighting fixtures similar to current styles on Townehomes and Patio Homes,
-  Bronze-colored anodized aluminum porch and deck handrails for Townehomes and Patio Homes,
-  Current simple square columns on unit entryways,
-  Cast brass house number plaques, and
-  A variety of Board-approved hardware, brackets, accessories, and landscaping features.

Option #2: (Rejected)

Adopt a new “Victorian English” architectural theme and vision for Tennyson:

The Vision Committee did not deliver a new appearance theme for Tennyson, however certain Vision Committee recommendations, such as the black Victorian-style Coventry series of exterior lighting fixtures, if extended to other architectural elements, suggested a new architectural theme for Tennyson. This style may be termed “Victorian English” in that it uses features and elements popular in mid-nineteenth century England, such as ornamental cast iron and wrought iron painted black. Some elements of this style are already within the community, such as the streetlights and the flowerpot at the entryway.
  • Tennyson would become a village with a “Victorian English” theme.
  • This approach would create a more formal, manicured park-like setting reflecting a lifestyle reminiscent of 19th century England.
  • The landscaping plan would reflect a “Victorian Garden” approach, to be in harmony with the new Victorian English architectural style of the community.
  • With this plan, homeowners would be encouraged to cultivate an “English Garden” theme at the patio-side or deck-side of each unit.
  • Natural greenspaces, features, and surroundings would be nurtured and preserved in keeping with those of a typical 19th century English country estate.
  • Pockets of interest would be cultivated within the common areas using formal flowers, plantings, and garden elements.
  • Tennyson’s current architectural theme and style would be modified to become more consistent with that of Victorian England.
  • Architectural design elements would be limited to those typical of the Victorian English period.
  • Existing architectural elements would be replaced in successive phases over the next few years with Victorian designs, colors, and materials. Examples include:
-    Black Victorian-style streetlights,
-    Black wrought iron fencing at bridges and featured locations,
-    Black wrought iron fencing and gate at pool,
-    Black Victorian-style iron street signposts,
-    Cobblestone pavers at street crossings and in key sidewalk feature areas,
-    Black cast iron Victorian-style mailboxes,
-    Black cast iron park benches,
-    Black cast exterior lighting fixtures on Townehomes and Patio Homes,
-    Black wrought iron porch and deck handrails for Townehomes and Patio Homes,
-    Shaped Victorian-style columns on unit entryways,
-    Black cast house number plaques,
-    Black wrought or cast iron hardware, brackets, accessories, and landscaping features.
